Professor Sofya Aptekar
Sofya Aptekar is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Core Faculty of Transnational, Cultural, and Community Studies at UMass Boston, where she teaches courses on theory, methods, and immigration. Sofya is interested in naturalization and de-naturalization, the intersections of immigration and military systems, discourses of immigrant deservingness, and biomedical boundaries of the nation. Her work has appeared in multiple publications, including Social Problems and Ethnic and Racial Studies, and she has published a book, The Road to Citizenship: What Naturalization Means for Immigrants and the United States. She is writing her second book on immigrants in the military and conducting a project with undocumented immigrants at CUNY.
