Since its inception in the wake of 9/11, ICE has been expanding its work up and down the company, by filling the political vacuum left by a stagnated immigration reform debate on capital hill with concrete action on deportations. This action has come by way of the development of the agencies technologies, as well as lobbying to protect and expand its growing access to the US treasury purse strings through justifying its mandate.
In New York state luxury landlords collect millions in rent from ICE – landlords who have funded Andrew Cuomo’s political campaigns.Meanwhile ICE has been operating in the shadows throughout New York City, to circumvent Sanctuary policies which limit their ability to detain undocumented migrants. Reports of ICE operations in the NY metro area show a surge in arrests and attempted arrests at courthouses and operations targeting private residences.
ICE and other enforcement agencies have worked in an increasingly clandestine manner within New York. This group will examine ICE raids, and corporate and political complicity in border enforcement actions within New York, with a focus on the collaboration between ICE and other city institutions like law enforcement.
